Red Moon-- The Fog

Red Moon-- The Fog

For three days, there were blackouts across the world. Then, the fog came in. People started disappearing. Even thought the cries of people could be heard, no one could see the victims... or their attackers. You must survive in this apocalyptic world.

End nears for shot boxer Hector 'Macho' Camacho

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) ? The mother of Hector "Macho" Camacho says she has decided to have doctors cut off life support for the former world champion boxer Saturday once three more of his sons get a last chance to see him.

Though opposed by Camacho's eldest son, Maria Matias, the boxer's mother, said she had decided it was time for doctors to disconnect the machines that have kept him alive since he was shot in the face earlier in the week.

"I lost my son three days ago. He's alive only because of a machine," Matias said. "My son is not alive. My son is only alive for the people who love him," she added.

She said at a news conference Friday night that she was waiting only for Camacho's three other sons, who were expected to arrive from the U.S. mainland early Saturday. "Until they arrive, we will not disconnect the machine," Matias said.

Another news conference was scheduled for Saturday morning at Centro Medico, the main trauma center for San Juan.

The former champion's mother has the final say in the matter, but his eldest son, Hector Camacho Jr., said he wanted to keep his father alive.

"He's going to fight until the end. My father is a boxer," the son said.

Although doctors had said Camacho was clinically brain dead from a shooting Tuesday night in his hometown of Bayamon, relatives and friends told The Associated Press they were still wrestling with the idea of removing him from life support.

"It is a very difficult decision, a very delicate decision," former pro boxer Victor "Luvi" Callejas, a longtime friend, said in a phone interview. "The last thing we lose is hope and faith. If there is still hope and faith, why not wait a little more?"

Aida Camacho, one of the boxer's aunts, said in an interview that the family could decide by late Friday whether to donate his organs.

As some relatives and friends continued to pray for a miracle, condolences flowed in for Camacho's family and preparations were being made for memorials and a funeral Mass.

Gov. Luis Fortuno lamented what he called a sudden loss. "'Macho' will always be remembered for his spontaneity and charisma in and out of the ring," he said.

Also offering condolences was governor-elect Alejandro Garcia Padilla, who defeated Fortuno in November.

"The life of Macho Camacho, like other great athletes of ours, united the country," he said. "We celebrated his triumphs in the streets and we applauded him with noble sportsmanship when he didn't prevail."

Camacho was shot as he sat in a car with a friend, 49-year-old Adrian Mojica Moreno, who was killed in the attack. Police spokesman Alex Diaz said officers found nine small bags of cocaine in the friend's pocket and a 10th bag open inside the car.

Police reported no arrests and said investigators continued to look for potential witnesses. Capt. Rafael Rosa told reporters Friday that they were following several leads, but declined to say whether police had identified any suspects. He said very few witnesses were cooperating.

Hector Camacho Jr. decried the violence that grips Puerto Rico, a U.S. island territory of nearly 4 million people that reported a record 1,117 homicides last year.

"Death, jail, drugs, killings," he said. "That's what the streets are now."

Camacho's sisters have said they would like to fly Camacho's body to New York and bury him there. Camacho grew up mostly in Harlem, earning the nickname the "Harlem Heckler."

He won super lightweight, lightweight and junior welterweight world titles in the 1980s and fought high-profile bouts against Felix Trinidad, Julio Cesar Chavez and Sugar Ray Leonard while compiling a career record of 79-6-3. He knocked out Leonard in 1997, ending the former champ's final comeback attempt.

Camacho battled drug, alcohol and other problems throughout his life. He was sentenced in 2007 to seven years in prison on burglary charges, but a judge eventually suspended all but one year of the sentence and gave Camacho probation. He wound up serving two weeks in jail after violating that probation. A wife also filed domestic abuse complaints against him twice before their divorce.

Arafat's remains said to be exhumed Tuesday

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) ? The remains of former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat will be exhumed Tuesday as part of a renewed investigation into his death, a Palestinian investigator said Saturday.

Arafat died in November 2004 in a French military hospital, a month after suddenly falling ill. Palestinian officials claim he was poisoned by Israel, but have not presented evidence. Israel has denied such allegations.

Earlier this year, the detection of a lethal radioactive substance in biological traces on Arafat's clothing sparked a new investigation. Tests were inconclusive, and experts said they need to check his remains to learn more.

On Tuesday, Swiss, French and Russian experts will take samples from Arafat's bones, said Tawfik Tirawi, who heads the Palestinian team investigating the death. They will examine the samples in their home countries.

Arafat will be reburied the same day with military honors, but the ceremony will be closed to the public, Tirawi told a news conference.

He did not specify when results would be announced but said the probe could take months.

Earlier this month, workers began prying open the concrete-encased tomb in Arafat's former government headquarters in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

The Palestinian Authority, the self-rule government in the West Bank, had hesitated before agreeing to exhume the remains, in part because of cultural and religious sensitivities.

Since mid-November, the gravesite has been surrounded with a blue tarpaulin and roads leading to the Arafat mausoleum were closed. Arafat is still widely revered in the Palestinian territories, and Palestinian officials said they don't want the process observed by media and others.

The new probe into his death began this summer, after a Swiss lab discovered traces of polonium-210, a deadly radioactive isotope, on clothes said to be Arafat's. The clothes were provided by Arafat's widow, Suha, and given to the lab by the Arab satellite TV station Al-Jazeera. Separately, Mrs. Arafat asked the French government to investigate, while the Palestinian Authority called in Russian experts.

Arafat's death has remained a mystery for many. While the immediate cause of death was a stroke, the underlying source of an illness he suffered in his final weeks has never been clear, leading to persistent conspiracy theories that he had cancer, AIDS or was poisoned.

Many in the Arab world believe Arafat, the face of the Palestinian independence struggle for four decades, was killed by Israel. Israel, which saw Arafat as an obstacle to peace, vehemently denies the charge.

There is no guarantee the exhumation will solve the mystery. Polonium-210 is known to rapidly decompose, and experts are divided over whether any remaining samples will be sufficient for testing.

One Direction & The Wanted Twitter Feud Gets Heated

Two of today’s hottest boy bands are in a serious Twitter feud. The boys of One Directions and The Wanted took to Twitter to well basically talk trash about each other and it got a little heated. The little Twitter feud between The Wanted and One Direction all began when Zayn Malik, singer for One Direction, sent a Tweet dissing The Wanted’s Max George. See George uploaded a picture of himself and Psy with the Tweet “Psy, writing, ?The first step is acceptance #geekoftheweek.? For whatever reason Zayn decided he was going to comment on that with the below Tweet. @MaxTheWanted p.s your display just how’s how much of a wannabe you are Clearly that didn’t go over to well with Max, so began the war of words that went a little something like this. ?That?s not very nice. I was just starting to like you and your RnB hits.? After that reinforcements were brought in so to speak with Tony Parker speaking up for his bandmate Max. ?I think ?1 stripes? got his knickers in a twist bro,? For whatever reason that seemed to be slam at the blonde strip in Malik’s hair but I am not sure exactly [...]

Cupertino posts tweaked Apple spaceship campus plans as launch day slips to 2016

Have you wanted as direct a look as possible at Apple's latest plans for its spaceship-like campus? You've got it -- although you may not be in love with the reason why. Details posted by the city of Cupertino reflect a potential delay in an environmental impact study that might not wrap up until June 2013. If the analysis takes that long, Apple may have to push back the halo-shaped office's opening until 2016, roughly a year later than expected. It's hard to be sympathetic when most of those who'll see the campus first-hand will have to wear an employee badge; even so, it's slightly disappointing to realize that the renderings and schematics at the source link may be our only only glimpse at the company's solar-powered donut for quite awhile.

Ten Articles To Help You Explain This Election to Your Relatives

155722985 President Barack Obama and his family head back to Washington, D.C., from Chicago the day after Obama's re-election.

One of the unwelcome perks of political reporting is the widespread belief among your peers that you want to spend more time talking about politics. Any trip home, like the one I?m going to make on Thursday, becomes a tour of friends and family who want me to explain the inside story of the election one more time. I end up pointing these people to good articles by other people, by insiders and investigative reporters, and this usually gives me enough time to run away.

You can try it, too. This may have felt like a dull election at times, but it was one of the most pointed clashes of ideologies and strategies in decades. Your own family might want to quote back Saturday Night Live or Daily Show segments; you can impress them by diving much deeper into the real story of the race. These are some of this election?s must-read articles:

Sometimes you write a story with a thesis that gets blown to pieces?and a lot of bread crumbs leading to the actual truth. Ari Berman?s 2011 profile of Barack Obama?s campaign manager revealed just how little love Messina could expect from progressives. The new guy, a veteran of Sen. Max Baucus? office, would run a ?cautious, controlling, top-down in structure? campaign, pouring acid on the grassroots. Luckily for Obama, it didn?t happen, and the article now looks like a smorgasboard of foreshadowing.

After the 2010 election, Messina spoke at the winter meeting of the Democracy Alliance, a group of wealthy progressive funders. He gave two PowerPoint presentations, including one on the administration?s accomplishments?the stimulus, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, healthcare and financial reform. The other was on what was still to come?immigration reform, the START treaty, repealing DADT. ?Jim, you?re missing a word,? one donor told him during the Q&A.

?What word?? Messina responded.

?The word ?jobs,?? the donor said.

The smartass donor sounds right, but he doesn?t see how Messina will use those box-checked accomplishments to excite the Democratic base, and he doesn?t foresee a future in which the jobs picture might be good enough to save Obama.

The Romney Economy
Benjamin Wallace-Wells, New York

Long before the Obama campaign or the super PACs launched their attacks on Bain Capital, Wallace-Wells decided to tell the company?s history. The result took something previously relegated to gross campaign ads and revealed that ? well, it would be hard to defend even without those gross campaign ads.

Private equity seemed to provide an early warning of broader changes. In three years during the early nineties, the Princeton economist Henry Farber has found, roughly 10 percent of American white-collar male managers lost their jobs. For the first time, according to data collected through the General Social Survey, white-collar workers were nearly as worried about losing their jobs as blue-collar workers. Those white-collar workers who kept their jobs worked harder, and the compensation that had once been spread through the broader middle ranks of corporations now collected at the top. In 1980, a CEO had earned about 35 times the wages of an average worker; by 1990, it was about 80; and by 2000, it was about 300.

A good companion piece: Robert Draper?s look at Priorities USA, the at-first-derided pro-Obama duper PAC that focused like a UAW shop laser on Bain and drove up Romney?s negatives.

Pity the poor ?embedded? reporter. Her news organization spends at least $1,000 per day, usually more, to follow a presidential candidate. She gets on the plane, gets off the plane, gets on the plane, gets off the plane, maybe catches some time with campaign aides, almost never gets any time with the candidate. (I really felt for these embeds every time a big news network would bigfoot in and talk to Romney. They weren?t schlepping from Marriott to Marriott for the privilege.) But the great reporters took their opportunities when they arrived. My favorite example: Reston hassling the people entering a high-dollar Romney fundraiser and finding out what they think.

"I don't think the common person is getting it," she said from the passenger seat of a Range Rover stamped with East Hampton beach permits. "Nobody understands why Obama is hurting them.

?We've got the message," she added. "But my college kid, the baby sitters, the nails ladies?everybody who's got the right to vote?they don't understand what's going on. I just think if you're lower income?one, you're not as educated, two, they don't understand how it works, they don't understand how the systems work, they don't understand the impact."

Coal Miner?s Donor
Alec MacGillis, New Republic

One of the best, least-bubbled reporters who covered the race, MacGillis made a series of reporting trips to Ohio that made him an early debunker of baseless ?Romney surge? hype. He also broke plenty of news about how relaxed campaign finance laws were cracking open the dam for Republican campaigns. Robert Murray of Murray Energy, a coal magnate backer of Romney, helped inflate the size of the candidate?s pro-coal crowds and donors.

Internal Murray documents show just how upset Murray becomes when employees fail to join the giving. In missives, he cajoles employees to attend fund-raisers and scolds them when they or their subordinates do not. In cases of low participation, reminders from his lieutenants have included tables or spreadsheets showing how each of the eleven Murray subsidiaries was performing. And at least one note came with a list of names of employees who had not yet given. ?What is so difficult about asking a well-paid, salaried employee to give us three hours of his/her time every two months?? Murray writes in a March 2012 letter. ?We have been insulted by every salaried employee who does not support our efforts.? He concludes: ?I do not recall ever seeing the attached list of employees ? at one of our fund-raisers.?

Rooflights and Dormers ? Ideal Windows for Loft Conversions

Window choices for your loft conversion are limited. Obviously, you cannot install a double-hung or a bay and bow window in your attic. Also, there are building regulations that you need to observe when installing windows in your loft. Basically, there are only two window types that are most ideal for loft conversions: rooflights and dormers. Of course, you can reinvent and be creative with how you want a window to appear and be installed in your loft. However, rooflights and dormers earn the biggest favour. Read on and find out why.

Rooflights

Rooflights resemble skylights but they?re not totally the same. Rooflight forms are more diverse?from a piece of rectangular glass hatch to a roof-like structure protruding from the roof?s exterior. A skylight is just usually a piece of rectangular glass window.

Rooflights are not just perfect with loft conversions. They can also be installed on flat roof surfaces. Rooflight installation is not restricted much by building codes. However, you may need a professional?s guidance when it comes to choosing among rooflight sizes and glazing options. While rooflights are effective in bringing in light to a loft conversion, they don?t add any more headroom.

Rooflights have different opening styles; two of which are top hung and pivoted. The top hung window opens from its bottom part outward. This opening style creates the illusion of more space in the loft area. Also, most people find this the easiest way of opening a loft window. Meanwhile, pivoted windows are best if there are furniture under the windows. These operate by pulling the opening bar at the top of the window inward. By doing so, the bottom part of the window opens outward.

Dormers

Dormers are like small house-like structures installed on the roof surface of a house. They are vertical windows, usually protruding from the roof?s exterior, which give the loft more headroom. It?s a bit funny to think that they are windows with their own roofs.

Installing a dormer is not complicated. And like with rooflights, building codes regarding dormers don?t restrict too much. However, you need to remember not to install a dormer facing the highway. Do not also install a dormer near the edges or the ridge of your roof. Consider your house?s symmetry when deciding on the specific location on which to install a dormer window.

Dormers can also affect the exterior appearance of your house. You can choose between gable and flat dormer roof depending on which will best fit your house?s architectural style. Check out pictures of houses with dormers to get some ideas on dormer styles and installation. Most of the time, two regular-sized dormers are installed instead of just a large one.

Even if you only are only presented with two window types that work perfectly for loft conversions, do not forget that you can be innovative, modern, daring, and creative with your own style. Believe it or not, you can do a lot of awesome things with just these two window options.

Misdemeanor charge dismissed for MMA fighter found naked in a church

SANTA ANA, Calif. - A misdemeanour vandalism charge has been dismissed against mixed martial arts fighter and reality show host Jason "Mayhem" Miller, who was found naked in a Southern California church.

Court records show that the 31-year-old Miller had the charge dismissed at a hearing Wednesday.

Miller was found nude in a church three months ago by a pastor who called authorities when he found books and CDs that were strewn about and missing boards from a previously broken window.

Orange County prosecutors said Miller was accused of breaking at least one picture frame, spray-painting inside the church and damaging a propane tank and other items.

Miller, has fought for several organizations including the UFC, and hosted the MTV show "Bully Beatdown."

U.S. concerned about Bahrain violence, weak follow-up on reforms

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. officials voiced concern on Tuesday that Bahrain's failure to implement key reforms outlined in an independent 2011 report is making political dialogue more difficult and widening fissures in society in ways that would benefit Iran.

Bahrain, where the U.S. Fifth Fleet is based, has been under Western pressure to implement recommendations for police, judicial, media and education reforms made by the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI), an independent commission of international legal experts.

"We are worried that this society is moving apart rather than coming together in a way that would ensure both human rights and stability," said a senior U.S. official, speaking to reporters on condition he not be identified by name.

"It's absolutely clear that if society breaks apart, Iran will be the big winner and beneficiary," added the official.

Shi'ite protesters complain they continue to be marginalized by Bahrain's Sunni rulers. The strategically located island state is a key U.S. ally in Washington's stand-off with Shi'ite Iran.

The BICI report, issued last year, said 35 people died during unrest which erupted in the Persian Gulf monarchy in February 2011 after revolts overthrew dictators in Egypt and Tunisia.

The U.S. official said Bahrain had "followed a number of the recommendations" including allowing Red Cross access to prisoners, issuing arrest protocols and modest police training and setting up an ombudsman in the Ministry of Interior.

"On the hardest issues, the government has not followed through," he said, citing people still being held in prison or facing prosecution for the early 2011 demonstrations.

"We remain concerned about increasing violence in Bahrain, by limits on free expression and assembly and a political environment that's become increasingly difficult and that's made reconciliation and political dialogue more difficult," said the official.

Washington also lamented fresh violence in the past month, including Molotov cocktails and other violent actions by protesters, as well an "excessive use of force by police and security forces," said the official.

A second U.S. official said the 60-year-old U.S. security relationship with Bahrain was critical to regional stability and required a balancing act by Washington.

American policy aimed to "balance those requirements and those interests with those we have at the same time in encouraging reform, given our commitment to the fact that reform is the only way we can see that genuine stability and prosperity will emerge in the region," said he second official.

Amazon Kindle (2012)

Last year, we awarded the entry-level Amazon Kindle our Editors' Choice for its excellent value, slim form factor, and robust ebook ecosystem. This year, Amazon introduced the higher-end Kindle Paperwhite, which got most of the press ink thanks to its new edge-lit lighting. However, the company also saw fit to release a modestly updated version of the base model, with a slightly improved screen and a lower ($69 direct) price. After testing it, we found that the new improvements help keep this little?ebook reader solidly in the lead among budget models, even if its lack of a touch screen is beginning to feel a bit dated.

Design and Display
This year's Amazon Kindle has the same form factor as before. It measures 6.5 by 4.5 by 0.34 inches (HWD) and weighs 5.98 ounces. You can now get one in black as well as the standard gray. And the new black version looks sharp. Both models have the same plastic bezel and soft touch back panel as before, and are quite comfortable to hold for long reading sessions.?In fact, you could argue it's easier to hold one of these than it is a touch screen version, since you can place your fingers on the screen without accidentally turning pages.?

For that task, duplicate sets of hardware page-turn buttons sit on the left and right edges of the Kindle's frame. The larger one moves forward one page, while the smaller one moves back one page. The buttons are a little tough to press at first, but once you get used to the positioning, they're quite responsive. Now that the Kindle has been out for a year in this form factor, reports have surfaced about the page turn buttons loosening up and eventually not working. I can confirm that the buttons on the model I purchased last November feel decidedly looser than the new loaner I'm reviewing, although they still work fine. It's just something to be aware of.

Beneath the screen is a raised, five-way control pad, bracketed by Back, Keyboard, Menu, and Home buttons. A Power button and micro USB charger port occupy the bottom panel. The package includes a white USB cable, but no AC adapter. Amazon sells a $9.99 AC adapter if you want one, along with a $34.99 leather case that looks nice but adds noticeable heft and thickness.

At 167ppi, the 6-inch, E Ink Pearl screen shares the same pixel density as the older model; it doesn't get the Kindle Paperwhite's sharper 212ppi screen, nor does it get touch capability. When placed next to last year's model, there's a slight but noticeable difference in contrast. The new version's fonts look ever so slightly darker and crisper. It's nothing you would notice without the side-by-side comparison, though.

Interface, Reading, and Kindle Store
To get started, plug the Kindle into a USB port on a computer to begin charging it, choose your interface language, and then log onto your Wi-Fi network. It's little places like this where you'll wish you had a touch screen, as moving the cursor from letter to letter to enter the network password is a little clumsy.

Once you download a few books and start reading, though, the Kindle offers an enjoyable experience. Page turns are just as fast as before thanks to the 800MHz processor, and as with last year's model, no longer flash the entire screen black each time. Amazon employs a caching mechanism that only flashes the page every six page turns. You get eight different font sizes, three line spacing settings, and a choice of three fonts: regular, condensed, and sans serif. You can make annotations and take notes, but without an on-screen keyboard, this is a novelty at best; if you think you might be doing that a lot, it's worth the extra cash to spring for the Kindle Paperwhite.

A few nits: The Home screen is still the same, boring one that lists your books, sorted by most recent, title, or author. You can create collections, but those collections stay on the device and can't be easily transferred to the iPhone app, for example, the way iTunes shares music playlists in the cloud. You also don't get the book cover view that the Kindle Paperwhite adopted this year; it's text only.?None of these are deal-breakers, though.

Amazon's Kindle Store is packed with Recommended and Top Book lists, so finding new things to read is a pleasure. You can even browse the store easily from the Kindle, which is a better shopping experience than you get on the Kobo Mini, despite that ebook reader's touch screen interface. Amazon makes apps for the iPhone, iPad, Android phones, Macs, and PCs, and syncs your book collections, last-read pages, and notes among all of them.

Other Features, Special Offers, and Conclusions
There's no 3G version, which is fine for an inexpensive ebook reader; the base Amazon Kindle supports 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi; there's no cellular radio here. You get 2GB of internal storage as before, with 1.25GB free for your books, which should be good for roughly 1,000 of them. As always, Amazon stores all of your purchases in the cloud, so you can retrieve them whenever you want, and also view them on other devices.

The Kindle supports Amazon's own Kindle format, plus TXT, PDF, MOBI, HTML, DOC, and DOCX files, but not ePub, which might limit your ability to borrow books from public libraries. There's no memory card slot either, so you can't expand storage or easily sideload books. If these features are important to you, have a look at the Barnes & Noble Nook Simple Touch, which adds ePub support and a memory card slot. Also missing: A headphone jack and audiobook support.

As with other Kindle products, there are two versions available. The $69 model comes with Special Offers, which appear on the home screen whenever it's locked, and also appear as small banner ads while browsing in the store. They don't appear during actual reading, although I still find it disconcerting to pick up the ebook reader and see a new ad each time. If you don't like the ads, you can either pay $20 to remove them, or you can buy a version without ads up front for $89. Note that while the base model with Special Offers receives a $10 price cut, from $79 to $69, the model without Special Offers is now $20 less expensive, down from $109 to $89, which is a welcome development.

The new $69 price keeps the Amazon Kindle competitive and easily worth the cash. The Kobo Mini costs $79, doesn't display ads, supports ePub files, has a memory card slot, and offers a touch screen. But the screen itself is an inch smaller, at just 5 inches, its sluggish page turns and slightly stubborn finger response are difficult to overlook, and its store isn't as fun to browse from the device. The Barnes & Noble Nook Simple Touch costs $99; it has a 6-inch touch screen and many of the same benefits as the Kobo Mini, but $30 is a fairly significant jump in price. Otherwise, your other options sail past the $100 mark, which puts you in an Amazon Kindle Paperwhite. For just $69, or $89 without ads, the base Amazon Kindle remains our favorite low-cost ebook reader.

Israel pounds Gaza as rocket fire wanes; talks in Egypt

GAZA/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel bombed dozens of suspected guerrilla sites in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip on Monday and Palestinian rocket fire from the enclave dropped off as international efforts to broker a truce intensified.

Ten civilians and two field commanders from the Islamic Jihad faction were killed and at least 30 other Palestinians were hurt in the new air strikes, hospital officials said, bringing the death toll from six days of clashes in Gaza to 85.

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was due to arrive in Cairo to weigh in on ceasefire efforts led by Egypt, which borders both Israel and Gaza and whose Islamist-rooted government has been hosting leaders of Hamas.

Israeli media said a delegation from Israel had also been to Cairo for truce talks, though a spokesman for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government declined comment on the matter.

The Gaza flare-up, and Israel's signaling that it could soon escalate from the aerial bombings to a ground sweep of the cramped and impoverished enclave, have stoked the worries of world powers watching an already combustible region.

As Hamas and other Islamist factions spurn permanent peace with the Jewish state, mediated deals for each to hold fire unilaterally have been the only formula for stemming bloodshed in the past. But each side now placed the onus on the other.

Izzat Risheq, aide to Hamas politburo chief Khaled Meshaal, wrote on Facebook that Hamas would enter a truce only after Israel "stops its aggression, ends its policy of targeted assassinations and lifts the blockade of Gaza".

Listing Israel's terms, Vice Prime Minister Moshe Yaalon wrote on Twitter: "If there is quiet in the south and no rockets and missiles are fired at Israel's citizens, nor terrorist attacks engineered from the Gaza Strip, we will not attack."

Yaalon also said Israel wanted an end to Gaza guerrilla activity in the neighboring Egyptian Sinai, a desert peninsula where lawlessness has spread during Cairo's political crises.

WESTERN SUPPORT

Israel's operation has so far drawn Western support for what U.S. and European leaders have called its right to self-defense in the face of years of cross-border attacks, but there have also been growing appeals for an end to the hostilities.

Sympathy for Israel may wear thin as the Gaza toll mounts. On Sunday, 11 Palestinian civilians were apparently killed during an Israeli attack on a militant which brought a three-storey family home crashing down on them.

"I am deeply saddened by the reported deaths of more than ten members of the Dalu family... (and) by the continuing firing of rockets against Israeli towns, which have killed several Israeli civilians. I strongly urge the parties to cooperate with all efforts led by Egypt to reach an immediate ceasefire," Ban said before leaving for Egypt. He visits Israel on Tuesday.

At least 22 of the Gaza fatalities have been children.

Netanyahu said he had assured world leaders that Israel was doing its utmost to avoid causing civilian casualties in Gaza.

In scenes recalling Israel's 2008-2009 winter invasion of Gaza, tanks, artillery and infantry have massed in field encampments along the sandy, fenced-off border and military convoys moved on roads in the area. Israel has also authorized the call-up of 75,000 military reservists, so far mobilizing around half that number.

A big, bloody rocket strike on Israelis might be enough for Netanyahu to give a green light for a ground offensive.

Three Israelis have been killed and dozens wounded in hundreds of salvoes since Wednesday. Some rockets reached as far as Tel Aviv, Israel's commercial capital, but were shot down by the country's air defense system.

As a precaution against the rocket interceptions endangering nearby Ben-Gurion International Airport, civil aviation authorities said on Monday new flight paths were being used. There was no indication takeoffs and landings at Ben-Gurion had been affected.

OVERNIGHT LULL

There was no rocket fire from Gaza between midnight and daybreak on Monday, the Israeli military said. It said a few cross-border launches followed in the early morning but there was no immediate word on casualties in southern Israel, where such salvoes usually set off sirens so residents can shelter.

Israel bombed some 80 sites in Gaza overnight, the military said, adding in a statement that targets included "under-ground rocket launching sites, terror tunnels and training bases" as well as "buildings owned by senior terrorist operatives".

Israel's declared goal is to deplete Gaza arsenals and force Hamas to stop rocket fire that has bedeviled Israeli border towns for years. The rockets now have greater range, putting Tel Aviv and Jerusalem within their reach - a strategic weapon for Gaza's otherwise massively outgunned guerrillas.

The southern resort city of Eilat was apparently added to the list of targets when residents said they heard explosions on Sunday and Monday thought to be rockets, though there was no word on casualties or damage.

Eilat is thought to be well out of the range of any rocket in possession of Hamas or any other Gaza group. But militants have in the recent past fired rockets at Eilat and its surroundings, using Egypt's Sinai desert as a launch site.

Hamas and other groups in Gaza are sworn enemies of the Jewish state which they refuse to recognize and seek to eradicate, claiming all Israeli territory as rightfully theirs.

Hamas won legislative elections in the Palestinian Territories in 2006 but a year later, after the collapse of a unity government under President Mahmoud Abbas the Islamist group seized control of Gaza in a brief and bloody civil war with forces loyal to Abbas.

Abbas then dismissed the Hamas government led by the group's leader Ismail Haniyeh but he refuses to recognize Abbas' authority and runs Gazan affairs.

While it is denounced as a terrorist organization in the West, Hamas enjoys widespread support in the Arab world, where Islamist parties are on the rise.

U.S.-backed Abbas and Fatah hold sway in the Israeli-occupied West Bank from their seat of government in the town of Ramallah. The Palestinians seek to establish an independent state in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Moneycation: Avoid bankruptcy: Tips to grow your small business ...

By John Reiter

There are many more small businesses in the United States than large businesses, so it?s easy to understand why they are vital to the U.S. economy. Considering that even multi-million dollar corporations have had to file for bankruptcy protection or close their doors completely in recent years, many people mistakenly assume that small businesses are struggling in today?s economy.

Small businesses can be successful

Small businesses run the gamut from local law firms with 100 attorneys to Mom and Pop corner stores with 50 employees and even one-man operations that are run out of the owner?s home office. Although it?s inevitable that not every small business will ultimately be a success, many are flourishing. A recent study by Chicago-based SurePayroll surveyed 300 small businesses, and an impressive 30% of respondents had actually seen a sales increase over the past year.

However, if you are a small business owner who is experiencing tough times rather than watching your sales soar through the roof, it may be tempting to throw in the towel. A few of the top reasons that many small businesses fail include:
  • Lack of experience
  • Insufficient capital (lack of funds)
  • Poor location
  • Poor inventory management
  • Poor credit arrangement management
Bankruptcy can be avoided

Whether your business has significant debt because it is just getting off the ground or you are keeping creditors at bay by juggling debt from one credit card or line of credit to another, therefore treading water while trying to stay afloat, it is possible to grow your small business and avoid bankruptcy.
Planning and preparing for the future, which will predictably include some bumps along the way, is one of the best ways to help your business grow economically. The Small Business Administration recommends the following:

1. Forecast for growth in the future even as you focus on the present. Strategic thinking and planning can help you achieve your ideal outcome.

2. Use technology to stay competitive. It?s vital for small business owners to understand current technologies and take advantage of them! Accounting software, planning software such as an online calendar, time tracking software to help determine which tasks are profitable, email management programs to keep things streamlined between multiple email accounts and mobile devices that can make life easier when you?re on the go are just a few suggestions.

3. Develop a marketing plan that will help you make a profit. A solid marketing plan should include everything from understanding your target audience and how you plan to reach it to how you will separate yourself from the competition and make more sales.

4. Consider franchising your business if you are interested in expanding without spending most of the money yourself.? Realistically speaking, few small businesses can be franchised, but it is possible if you offer superior products or services that are in high demand and your business model is easy to duplicate. Setting up the legal end of things will involve significant costs, but you could expand your business and earn franchise fees.

These are just a few suggestions to help your small business grow and avoid significant debt. If you honestly feel that bankruptcy may be your best option, it would be wise to meet with a legal professional for feedback and advice.

Diplomacy pushes Gaza peace momentum forward

JERUSALEM (AP) ? A diplomatic push to end Israel's nearly weeklong offensive in the Gaza Strip gained momentum Tuesday, with Egypt's president predicting that airstrikes would soon end, the U.S. Secretary of State racing to the region and Israel's prime minister saying his country would be a "willing partner" to a cease-fire with the Islamic militant group Hamas.

As international diplomats worked to cement a deal, a senior Hamas official said an agreement was close even as relentless airstrikes and rocket attacks between the two sides continued. The Israeli death toll rose to five with the deaths Tuesday of an Israeli soldier and a civilian contractor. More than 130 Palestinians have been killed.

"We haven't struck the deal yet, but we are progressing and it will most likely be tonight," Moussa Abu Marzouk said Tuesday from Cairo, where cease-fire talks were being held. A second Hamas official, Izzat Risheq, said later that a deal might not be reached.

Israeli officials said only that "intensive efforts" were under way to end the fighting. Israeli media quoted Defense Minister Ehud Barak as telling a closed meeting that Israel wanted a 24-hour test period of no rocket fire to see if Hamas could enforce a truce.

In what appeared to be a last-minute burst of heavy fire, Israeli tanks and gunboats shelled targets late Tuesday, and an airstrike killed two brothers riding on a motorcycle. The men weren't identified.

The fighting came shortly before U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton arrived. Clinton rushed to a late-night meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. President Barack Obama dispatched her to the Mideast from Cambodia, where she had accompanied him on a visit.

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, perhaps the most important interlocutor between Hamas, which rules the Palestinian territory, and the Israelis, said the negotiations between the two sides would yield "positive results" during the coming hours.

Israel demands an end to rocket fire from Gaza and a halt to weapons smuggling into Gaza through tunnels under the border with Egypt. It also wants international guarantees that Hamas will not rearm or use Egypt's Sinai region, which abuts both Gaza and southern Israel, to attack Israelis.

Hamas wants Israel to halt all attacks on Gaza and lift tight restrictions on trade and movement in and out of the territory that have been in place since Hamas seized Gaza by force in 2007. Israel has rejected such demands in the past.

In Brussels, a senior official of the European Union's foreign service said a cease-fire would include an end of Israeli airstrikes and targeted killings in Gaza, the opening of Gaza crossing points and an end to rocket attacks on Israel. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Violence raged on as the talks continued. An airstrike late Tuesday killed two journalists who work for the Hamas TV station, Al-Aqsa, according to a statement from the channel. The men were in a car hit by an airstrike, Gaza health official Ashraf al-Kidra said. Israel claims that many Hamas journalists are involved in militant activities. Earlier this week it targeted the station's offices, saying it served as a Hamas communications post.

By Tuesday, 133 Palestinians, including at least 54 civilians, were killed since Israel began an air onslaught that has so far included nearly 1,500 strikes. Some 840 people have been wounded, including 225 children, Gaza health officials said.

Five Israelis, including an 18-year-old soldier and a civilian contractor who worked for the military struck by rocket fire on Tuesday, have also been killed and dozens wounded since the fighting began last week, the numbers possibly kept down by a rocket-defense system that Israel developed with U.S. funding. More than 1,000 rockets have been fired at Israel this week, the military said.

Late Tuesday, a Palestinian rocket hit a house in the central Israeli city of Rishon Lezion, wounding two people and badly damaging the top two floors of the building, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. In other violence, a 60-year-old Israeli woman was seriously wounded in a firebombing attack as she drove in the West Bank, police said.

With the death toll rising, the international community stepped up efforts to bring a halt to the fighting that began last Wednesday with an Israel's assassination of the Hamas military chief.

"If a long-term solution can be put in place through diplomatic means, then Israel would be a willing partner to such a solution. But if stronger military action proves necessary to stop the constant barrage of rockets, Israel wouldn't hesitate to do what is necessary to defend our people," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said during a joint press conference in Jerusalem with visiting U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon.

Ban condemned Palestinian rocket attacks, but urged Israel to show "maximum restraint."

"Further escalation benefits no one," he said.

Minutes before Ban's arrival in Jerusalem from Egypt, Palestinian militants fired a rocket toward Jerusalem, just the second time it has targeted the city. The rocket fell in an open area southeast of the city.

Jerusalem had previously been considered beyond the range of Gaza rockets ? and an unlikely target because it is home to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, Islam's third-holiest shrine.

Earlier Tuesday, a man identified as Hamas' militant commander urged his fighters to keep up attacks on Israel. Speaking from hiding on Hamas-run TV and radio, Mohammed Deif said Hamas "must invest all resources to uproot this aggressor from our land," a reference to Israel.

Israeli warplanes dropped leaflets on several Gaza neighborhoods asking residents to evacuate and head toward the center of Gaza City along specific roads. The army "is not targeting any of you, and doesn't want to harm you or your families," the leaflets said. Palestinian militants urged residents to ignore the warnings, calling them "psychological warfare."

The Israeli military relies on a network of informants to identify its targets. Masked gunmen publicly shot dead six suspected collaborators with Israel in a large Gaza City intersection Tuesday, witnesses said. An Associated Press reporter saw a mob surrounding five of the bloodied corpses shortly after the killing.

Clinton was scheduled to meet with Netanyahu in Jerusalem, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank and Egyptian leaders in Cairo. Turkey's foreign minister and a delegation of Arab League foreign ministers traveled to Gaza on a separate truce mission. Airstrikes continued to hit Gaza even as they entered the territory.

"Turkey is standing by you," Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told the Hamas prime minister in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh. "Our demand is clear. Israel should end its aggression immediately and lift the inhumane blockade imposed on Gaza."

It was unclear how diplomatic efforts to achieve a cease-fire and stave off a threatened Israeli ground invasion into Gaza were hampered by the hard-to-bridge positions staked out by both sides ? and by the persistent attacks. Thousands of Israeli soldiers have been dispatched to the Gaza border in case of a decision to invade.

The U.S. considers Hamas, which has killed hundreds of Israelis in suicide and other attacks, to be a terror group and does not meet with its officials. The Obama administration blames Hamas for the latest eruption of violence and says Israel has the right to defend itself. At the same time, it has warned against a ground invasion, saying it could send casualties spiraling.

Netanyahu said earlier Tuesday that Israel was exploring a diplomatic solution, but wouldn't balk at a broader military operation.

"I prefer a diplomatic solution," Netanyahu said in a statement after meeting with Germany's Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, who was also in the region trying to advance peace efforts. "But if the fire continues, we will be forced to take broader measures and will not hesitate to do so."

Westerwelle said a truce must be urgently pursued, "but of course, there is one precondition for everything else, and this is a stop of the missile attacks against Israel."

The conflict erupted last week, when a resurgence in rocket fire from Gaza set off the Israeli offensive, which included hundreds of airstrikes on militants' underground rocket launchers and weapons' stores.

The onslaught turned deadlier over the weekend, as airstrikes began targeting the homes of suspected Hamas activists, leading to a spike in civilian casualties. Israel sent warnings in some cases, witnesses said, but in other instances missiles hit suddenly, burying residents under the rubble of their homes.

Hamas is deeply rooted in densely populated Gaza, and the movement's activists live in the midst of ordinary Gazans. Israel says militants are using civilians as human shields, both for their own safety and to launch rocket strikes from residential neighborhoods.

The conflict showed signs of spilling into the West Bank, as hundreds of Palestinian protesters in the town of Jenin clashed with Israeli forces during a demonstration against Israel's Gaza offensive.

Two Palestinian protesters were killed in anti-Israel demonstrations in the West Bank on Monday, according to Palestinian officials. Separate clashes occurred Tuesday in Ramallah, the seat of the Palestinian government, during the funeral for one of the dead.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who lost control of Gaza to Hamas in 2007, now governs from the West Bank. Abbas claims to represent both areas, and there is widespread sympathy among West Bank Palestinians for their brethren in Gaza.
