(AP) ? Seeking to project command in a crisis, President Barack Obama told storm-stricken residents along the East Coast that "America is with you" but warned that the disaster "is not yet over."

As the countdown to Election Day reached the one week mark, Obama immersed himself Tuesday in his official duties. He convened conference calls with state and local officials, held briefings in the White House Situation Room and dropped by Red Cross headquarters in Washington.

"My instructions to the federal agencies has been, 'Do not figure out why we can't do something; I want you to figure out how we do something,'" Obama said. "There's no excuse for inaction at this point."

Obama said there still were risks of flooding and downed power lines and called the storm "heartbreaking for the nation."

The White House also announced that Obama was scrapping a third consecutive day of campaigning and instead would travel to New Jersey on Wednesday to view the devastation from superstorm Sandy. His tour guide was to be New Jersey's Republican governor, Chris Christie, a supporter of GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

Christie's political affiliations, however, didn't stop him from showering praise on Obama for the president's response to the huge storm that battered his state and several others.

"The president has been all over this and he deserves great credit," Christie told MSNBC's "Morning Joe." ''I've been on the phone with him, like I said, yesterday personally three times. He gave me his number at the White House, told me to call him if I need anything, and he absolutely means it. It's been very good working with the president."

With Obama back in Washington, the White House, which had taken a backseat to the presidential campaign for months, suddenly was the hub of activity. Aides described the staff, especially those who had been sidelined by the re-election campaign, as reinvigorated by the challenge of coordinating the storm response.

Obama made phone calls to local officials well into the early morning hours Tuesday. He also convened a conference call with 13 governors and seven mayors in states impacted by the storm.

The officials, speaking in geographical order from south to north, briefed the president on the storm's impact and the status of recovery efforts in their areas. The president played the role of facilitator, trying to arrange for officials in places where the storm's impact was minor to send resources to hard-hit areas.

Obama planned to turn his attention back to campaigning Thursday, with stops scheduled in Nevada, Colorado and Ohio. Campaign officials said the president may try to make up for lost time by adding more events to an already busy schedule this weekend and into next week.

In debate, Romney reiterates Russia is 'geopolitical foe' of US

The GOP presidential candidate's comments about Russia, which he has repeated several times this year, are likely to irk the Kremlin, but are not apt to change US-Russian relations.

When he has accused Russia of being a "geopolitical foe" in the past, Moscow reacted with confusion and irritation, but little expectation of a change in US-Russian relations.

Mr. Romney first called Russia "our No. 1 geopolitical foe" during the Republican primaries in March, soon after an open mic caught President Barack Obama asking Russia's then-President Dmitry Medvedev to dial back their objections to US missile defense plans until after the November elections, when "I'll have more flexibility."

Although ostensibly a political attack against Mr. Obama, Romney's words caused puzzled concern in Moscow, the Monitor's Fred Weir reported.

A poll carried out by the independent, Moscow-based Levada Center earlier this month found that 42 percent of Russians think relations with the US are either "friendly," "good neighborly," or "normal and peaceful," while 47 percent think they are "cool" or "tense," and just 4 percent said they are "hostile."

"I can't see Romney's remarks as anything but an emotional outburst," says Gennady Gudkov, deputy chair of the State Duma's security committee. "That just doesn't correspond to the actual state of relations between our countries at all. Not only is Russia not a country that's hostile to the US, we are actually allies in many geopolitical issues. Russians may sometimes verbally abuse America, but we tend to keep our money over there, both privately and in the form of our national currency reserves, which are held largely in US dollars?. ?In fact, Russia is far more interested in our relations with the US than the Americans are in their ties with Russia." ...

"Regarding ideological clich?s, every time this or that side uses phrases like 'enemy No. 1,' this always alarms me, this smells of Hollywood and certain times [of the past]," Medvedev said. "I would recommend all US presidential candidates ... do two things. First, when phrasing their position, one needs to use one's head, one's good reason, which would not do harm to a presidential candidate."

When Romney repeated his criticism of Russia during his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in August ? he said that "Under my administration, our friends will see more loyalty, and [Vladimir Putin, who was sworn in as Russia's president in May,] will see a little less flexibility and more backbone" ? it again spurred a negative response from Moscow, Weir reported.

Sony goes Redhunting with PMWF55 and PMWF5 pro CineAlta 4K Super 35mm sensor camcorders

Having seen some of its high-end cinema camera thunder stolen by the likes of Red and Arri, Sony has just launched a pair of CineAlta PL-mount cameras with brand new Super 35mm sensors: The PMW-F5 and PMW-F55. Though both pack 4K CMOS imagers, the similarities grind to a halt there -- the higher-end PMW-F55 has a global shutter, wider color gamut and can output 4k along with 2k and HD video, while the PMW-F5 is a strictly 2k and HD model with a rolling shutter. Depending on the level of quality you want, there are several ways to capture video to each camcorder. MPEG-4 H.264 video or Sony's SR MPEG-4 SStP can be recorded onto Sony's new SxS PRO+ media, or if RAW quality is desired, there's the new AXS-R5 Access Memory System for 2K / 4K RAW capture -- which will also work with the current NEX-FS700. Using the latter system, the PMW-F5 is capable of grabbing up to 120fps slow motion RAW HD video, while the PMW-F55 can capture 240fps at 2k, putting it squarely in Epic-X territory. The new camcorders will arrive in February 2013, and while Sony hasn't outed pricing yet, it'll likely be well under the flagship 4k CineAlta F65's formidable $65k sticker. Check the PR after the break to get the entire technical skinny.

New way to prevent recurrent ear infections?

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Eliminating bacteria's DNA and boosting antimicrobial proteins that already exist may help prevent middle ear infections from reoccurring. These are the findings from a Nationwide Children's Hospital study that examined how an immune defense protein common in the middle ear interacts with a structure meant to protect a colony of bacteria.

The bacterium nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHI) causes a wide range of diseases of both the lower and upper airways, including middle ear infection. NTHI, like most other bacteria, can form a biofilm, a robust community of bacteria that allows the bacteria to evade the host's immune system and protects the bacteria from antibiotics and other therapies designed to kill them.

Human beta-defensin-3 is an antimicrobial defense protein expressed in the middle ear of humans and other mammals that kills both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Previous research has shown that if expression of beta-defensin is disrupted, the host's ability to control the bacteria in the upper airway is altered and infection worsens.

Investigators in The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital hypothesized that human beta-defensin-3 might lose its power to kill NTHI if it got caught up within the extracellular DNA that makes up a biofilm's outer layer, thus preventing its contact with bacteria within the biofilm.

"Antimicrobial host defense proteins, like human beta-defensin-3, have been shown to bind to non-host DNA," says Lauren O. Bakaletz, PhD director of the Center for Microbial Pathogenesis "This interaction has an impact on the defense protein's ability to function."

Upon examining their animal model of middle ear infection, Dr. Bakaletz' team found that bacterial DNA and the animal's defense peptides were detected together in biofilms that developed during infection. Also, the defense peptide was predominantly co-localized with the biofilm's extracellular DNA.

When the team exposed the bacteria that cause ear infections to a concentration of human-beta defensin-3 that is typically detected in the a middle ear of a child with active infection, the peptide was able to kill 100 percent of the NTHI, but the killing stopped when extracellular DNA was introduced to the reaction.

"These data support the conclusion that the killing activity of the antimicrobial defense protein was decreased in an NTHI-induced biofilm due to its interaction with eDNA," says Dr. Bakaletz, who is the lead study author and professor of Pediatrics and Otolaryngology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

When they removed extracellular DNA from the biofilm, the killing activity of the defense peptide was rescued.

"The ability to restore antimicrobial defense protein activity is encouraging, since biofilms are resistant to most treatments, including traditional antibiotics," says Dr. Bakaletz.

Dr. Bakaletz says this study provides evidence for a new treatment regimen to target biofilms formed by NTHI during middle ear infection. One approach would be to deliver a therapeutic agent that can disrupt bacterial DNA, in conjunction with human beta-defensin-3 to the middle ear of a child with chronic, recurrent infection. Physicians could follow the same pathway used to target the middle ear during ear tube surgery, a common treatment for chronic ear infections.

"This approach would likely bolster the ability of the innate immune system to manage NTHI-induced biofilms, avoiding the need for antibiotics or empowering the use of antibiotics we already have in our arsenal," says Dr. Bakaletz. "Doing so could help diminish the recurrent nature of middle ear infection."

Barnes & Noble bolstering Nook Video catalogue, bringing UltraViolet to the HD and HD+

Barnes & Noble is seriously beefing up its Nook ecosystem by striking deals with studios and other providers to bring a ton of new video content to its HD and HD+ tablets. Debuting alongside the slates, expected to start shipping in the US this week, thousands of SD and HD movies and TV shows from the likes of NBCUniversal, 20th Century Fox and others will be available for your consumption. Brits will get the same opportunity a little later, coinciding with the local release of the tablets closer to the holiday season. B&N won't force you to buy its hardware to enjoy the expanded catalogue, as it'll be releasing free Nook Video apps in the future to access the content from all platforms. What's more, you'll also be able to view UltraViolet video on the HD and HD+, meaning you can watch all that previously purchased content right from the get-go. This is certainly a huge bonus for consumers that have a big UV library, and coupled with all the new content, we wouldn't be surprised if Nook sales start stealing a little heat from the Fire.

Health Insurance ? Travel without it at your cost! ? A Word in Your Ear

I will be the first to admit that in my time as a traveller I have, on occasions, omitted to buy a travel insurance policy or have let current one lapse when I have been away for longer than expected.? Not particularly smart, but after years of paying up faithfully, getting sick once and having a long drawn out battle with the insurance company I lost faith.?? After that I figured what the hell ? ?I was fit, healthy, had no pre-existing conditions and what possessions I lugged around were going to be cheaper to replace than the cost of the insurance.??? Stupid I know!

However, since starting work in an acute hospital setting I?ve had to deal with many overseas visitors who?ve failed to get adequate or no health cover.? I wish I could say this was an infrequent occurrence but sadly I can?t.? Sometimes it is like the United Nations on the ward.? Being involved with these patients has certainly changed my attitude to travel insurance and now I would never travel abroad without proper cover.

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, each year over 20,000 Australians who travel abroad need assistance. Of these approximately 1,400 are hospitalised, 1,000 die and 30 are evacuated ? and these are just the people they are aware of.

Medical cost of treatment overseas is generally very expensive. Evacuation from the U.S.A. to Australia can cost from 75,000 ? 300,000. A bout of gastro that ends in hospitalization could cost 1, 200 whilst a heart attack 12,500.?? Hospital stays in Asia can run to 800 dollars a day, and should you die transfer of your remains from Europe will set your family back about 10,000 dollars.??? In view of these figures is it reasonable to assume (unless you very financially well off) should something happen to you, failure to take out insurance could mean long-term financial hardship either for yourself or your family.

Facilities in many remote areas are often rudimentary and illness and injuries may require being transported to a main city or even another country.? That is very unlikely to happen without an insurance plan in place.? It is also unlikely that these medical facilities are going to speak your language and believe me, being sick in a medical facility where no one can tell you what they are doing to? you is very frightening ? I?ve been there!

So before travelling get adequate health insurance.

Here are some tips;

If you plan to participate in extreme sports/activities ? get insured ? A severe trauma to the head could mean surgery, and a period of rehabilitation and flying home for treatment may not be an option as many will be out of the question

Make sure that the policy covers the cost of repatriation.

If your country of origin has reciprocal rights with another one, such as England and Australia, check that the health systems cover the same kind of health provision and if not get insurance for anything that is not covered.? For example medicare in Australia does not cover the cost of ambulances but the NHS does in England.? Therefore, get cover for transport? to hospital.? Likewise with dental treatment.

Ensure that your policy covers assault, accidents, illness, acts of nature and terrorism ? ?after all these may require some kind of medical intervention if you are involved.

Check that the policy does not have a period of time before it takes effect.? I?ve come across policies that do not provide cover for the first 4, 12, weeks of travel and patients/families have been billed because they became unwell before the insurance kicked in.? These types of policies may be cheap but are of absolutely no use in these circumstances.

Do not let your policy expire if you decide to travel for longer than expected and do not forget to change your policy to cover any new areas of the world that you plan to visit but had not insured for.

These are just suggestions, there is probably plenty more advice out on the net. But please think hard before you skip or skimp health insurance, a good insurance policy with adequate cover is worth it.

Do you have any stories or tips about this subject to share?

Firefly glow lights up better LEDs

Hal Hodson, technology reporter

LEDs of the future may owe their shine to one of nature's brightest sparks, the firefly, which uses its bioluminescence to attract a mate.

Many insects have evolved light-bending biological features. The figeater beetle's bright green iridescence is achieved by selectively reflecting light, and moths' eyes contain antire?ective structures which boost light collection to let them go about their nocturnal lives. Like firefly bioluminescence, these features rely on tiny biological structures that selectively shift light either according to its colour or its polarisation. For example, if the wavelength of the incoming light matches size of the structures, it is reflected at odd angles, altering the perceived colour. The effect is similar to that of a diffraction grating or of polarised sunglasses.

Fireflies use this property to snag a mate: the brighter a firefly shines, the better its chances of attracting romantic attention. The light-bending nanostructures - known as lanterns, located on the outer surface of their light emitting organs - help send light into the environment efficiently by reducing the optical impedance between the air and lantern. This lets the insects maximise their light output while minimising their energy output. In all animals that rely on bioluminescence, efficient versions of these nanostructures have been selected for over hundreds of millions of years.

But researchers at the Biophotonics Lab of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology found another use for them: a better LED lightbulb.

Led by Ki-Hun Jeong, the team measured the dimensions of the firefly nanostructures with an electron microscope, then built replica structures onto the surface of an LED lens. Their new LED lens transmitted 3 per cent?more light than a traditional smooth lens, a small gain, but potentially significant in squeezing even more efficiency out of LED bulbs that are already dramatically more efficient than traditional incandescent bulbs.

Local business combines recycling, innovation

Who says Nicaraguans are not green pioneers? On the outskirts of Managua is an unassuming yet revolutionary local business that is proof positive of this country?s potential.

?El Gansito? is a small company that makes products out of recycled plastics and rubber. Its success is unquestionable after spawning five additional businesses since it started in the 1980s.?? ?

The original business started 25 years ago during the time of the Sandinista Revolution. Do to scarcity, needs, and demand, Jos? Enrique Castillo built his first machine to produce shoe soles out of recycled rubber. As time passed, his family?s business grew to such extent that now it produces more than a thousand different mechanical and hardware parts?everything from toilet plungers to hammer handles?all from recycled materials.

Recycled rubber and plastics are broken down into pellets

The five workshops, which are also the stores, are located in Masaya, Cuidad Jard?n, Don Bosco, Barri? Larreynaga, y by La Casa del Obrero. The shops are now managed and owned by Mr. Castillo?s two sons, Jos? Alexander and Jefferson Castillo.

At the Gansito, which is located in barrio Larreynaga, the Castillo family created all of their machines; similarly, they also designed and created all of the molds used in the fabrication of their products. Certainly, there is no doubt of the capacity of the people working at El Gansito, who come up with cleaver solutions to their everyday problems.

It was quite interesting to observe the process of fabrication of their products. It all starts with the recollection of the raw material; people bring in bags full of old shoe soles, boots, and almost any kind of rubber and plastic to sell it for the 8 cordobas per pound. The second step is to chop up all the recycled material in a chopping mill to make pellets that can be melted down. The small pieces of plastic and rubber are then introduced into another machine that melts the product and pumps it to a preset mold to get the desired shape.

Then the pellets are melted and reformed into new products?and bingo, no more clogged toilets

After ten seconds of cooling, the product is ready. It is important to notice that nothing is wasted since any excess material is reused again.??

There is no doubt that this small business is one of the many ?green jewels? we can find in Nicaragua. By mixing profit motive, sustainability, and entrepreneurship, El Gansito has set an example for others to follow in Nicaragua.

As a way to reward them for their work, an environmental commission of the UNAN (Universidad Nacional Aut?noma de Nicaragua) recently gave them a certificate to recognize their help towards protecting the environment. Small initiatives such as these should be recognized since they are the ones making a difference not only in Nicaragua, but also in the world!

El Gansito is located in Managua?s Barri? Larreynaga, Iglesia la Merced 2c. al sur. Phone: 2250-7212.

Egypt Acknowledges Sexual Harassment Spike Over Holiday

CAIRO -- Egypt's president acknowledged the widespread problem of sexual harassment his country Tuesday, ordering his interior minister to investigate a rash of assaults during a just-completed Muslim holiday.

Mohammed Morsi acted after his government reported 735 police complaints about sexual harassment over the four-day Eid al-Adha holiday, which ended Monday.

Morsi stressed the need to fight "all phenomena of moral chaos and abuses, especially harassment in Egyptian streets," spokesman Yasser Ali said in a statement.

The holiday features celebrations, crowded public squares ? and widespread harassment of women by men.

Rights activists have faulted Morsi's Islamist government for failing to take action against the wave of sexual assaults. His order Tuesday appeared to be an attempt to counter that charge.

Complaints about the problem, which has long been a feature of Egypt's society, gained prominence during last year's popular uprising that unseated longtime President Hosni Mubarak. Women activists and reporters told of severe assaults by men in Tahrir Square, the focus of the mass protests.

Activists say little, if anything, has changed.

A prominent activist, Azza Suleiman, told the state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper Tuesday that her two sons were assaulted in downtown Cairo during the holiday while trying to protect a group of foreigners, while police stood by watching the incident. She criticized the police and the Interior Ministry for failing to secure the crowded streets.

Last week, Egyptian Prime Minister Hisham Qandil condemned sexual harassment in remarks on his Facebook page, calling it a "catastrophe" that threatens society. Qandil said the Cabinet was preparing a law to impose harsher penalties for sexual harassment. Rights activists have been campaigning for such legislation for years.

Dr. Hani Henry, a psychology professor at the American University in Cairo, said that the widespread notion that women should dress more conservatively in order to reduce sexual harassment on Egypt's streets is one of the biggest impediments to addressing the issue.

"There's a `blaming the victim' mentality," Hany said. He predicted that addressing sexual harassment in Egypt's could be more difficult now that Islamists have emerged as the strongest political power in post-revolutionary Egypt.

(AP) ? About a quarter of the $148 billion budget for reconstruction after the March 2011 tsunami and nuclear disaster has been spent on unrelated projects, including subsidies for a contact lens factory and research whaling, a Japanese government accounting shows.

The audit documents released last week buttressed complaints over shortcomings in the reconstruction effort. More than half the 11.7 trillion yen ($148 billion) budget is yet to be disbursed, stalled by indecision and bureaucracy, while nearly all of the 340,000 people evacuated from the disaster zone remain uncertain whether, when and how they will ever resettle.

Many of the non-reconstruction-related projects loaded into the budget were included on the pretext they might contribute to Japan's economic revival, a strategy that the government now acknowledges was a mistake.

"It is true that the government has not done enough and has not done it adequately. We must listen to those who say the reconstruction should be the first priority," Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said in a speech to parliament on Monday.

He vowed that unrelated projects will be "strictly wrung out" of the budget.

But ensuring that funds go to their intended purpose might require an explicit change in the reconstruction spending law, which authorizes spending on such ambiguous purposes as creating eco-towns and supporting "employment measures."

Among the unrelated projects benefiting from the reconstruction budgets are: road building in distant Okinawa; prison vocational training in other parts of Japan; subsidies for a contact lens factory in central Japan; renovations of government offices in Tokyo; aircraft and fighter pilot training, research and production of rare earths minerals, a semiconductor research project and even funding to support whaling, ostensibly for research.

Some 30 million yen ($380,000) went to promoting the Tokyo Sky Tree, a transmission tower that is the world's tallest freestanding broadcast structure. Another 2.8 billion yen ($35 million) was requested by the Justice Ministry for a publicity campaign to "reassure the public" about the risks of big disasters.

Masahiro Matsumura, a politics professor at St. Andrews University in Osaka, Japan, said justifying such misuse by suggesting the benefits would "trickle down" to the disaster zone is typical of the political dysfunction that has hindered Japan's efforts to break out of two decades of debilitating economic slump.

"This is a manifestation of government indifference to rehabilitation. They are very good at making excuses," Matsumura told The Associated Press.

Near the crippled Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant, which suffered the additional blow from the worst nuclear accident since the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, recovery work has barely begun.

More than 325,000 of the 340,000 people evacuated from the disaster zone or forced to flee the areas around the nuclear plant after the March 11, 2011 disaster remain homeless or away from their homes, according to the most recent figures available.

In Rikuzentakata, a fishing enclave where 1,800 people were killed or went missing as the tsunami scoured the harbor, rebuilding has yet to begin in earnest, says Takashi Kubota, who left a government job in Tokyo in May 2011 to become the town's deputy mayor.

The tsunami destroyed 3,800 of Rikuzentakata's 9,000 homes. The first priority, he says, has been finding land for rebuilding homes ? on higher ground. For now, most evacuees are housed, generally unhappily, in temporary shelters in school playgrounds and sports fields.

"I can sum it up in two words ? speed and flexibility ? that are lacking," Kubota said. Showing a photo of the now non-existent downtown area, he said, "In 19 months, there have basically been no major changes. There is not one single new building yet."

The government has pledged to spend 23 trillion yen ($295 billion) over this decade on reconstruction and disaster prevention, 19 trillion yen ($245 billion) of it within five years.

But more than half the reconstruction budget remains unspent, according to the government's audit report.

The dithering is preventing the government, whose debt is already twice the size of the country's GDP, from getting the most bang for every buck.

"You've got economic malaise and political as well. That's just a recipe for disaster," said Matthew Circosta, an economist with Moody's Analytics in Sydney.

Part of the problem is the central government's strategy of managing the reconstruction from Tokyo instead of delegating it to provincial governments. At the same time, the local governments lack the staff and expertise for such major rebuilding.

The government "thinks it has to be in the driver's seat," Jun Iio, a government adviser and professor at Tokyo University told a conference in Sendai. "Unfortunately the reconstruction process is long and only if the local residents can agree on a plan will they move ahead on reconstruction."

"It is in this stage that creativity is needed for rebuilding," he said.

Even Sendai, a regional capital of over 1 million people much better equipped than most coastal communities to deal with the disaster, still has mountains of rubble. Much of it is piled amid the bare foundations, barren fields and broken buildings of its oceanside suburb of Arahama.

Sendai quickly restored disrupted power, gas and water supplies and its tsunami-swamped airport. The area's crumbled expressways and heavily damaged railway lines were repaired within weeks.

But farther north and south, ravaged coastal towns remain largely unoccupied.

More than 240 ports remain unbuilt; in many cases their harbors are treacherous with tsunami debris.

Like many working on the disaster, Yoshiaki Kawata of Kansai University worries that the slow progress on reconstruction will leave the region, traditionally one of Japan's poorest, without a viable economy.

"There is almost no one on the streets," he said in the tiny fishing hamlet of Ryoishi, where the sea rose 17 meters (56 feet). "Building a new town will take many years."

Even communities remain divided over how to rebuild. Moving residential areas to higher ground involves cumbersome bureaucratic procedures and complicated ownership issues. Each day of delay, meanwhile, raises the likelihood that residents will leave and that local businesses will fail to recover, says Itsunori Onodera, a lawmaker from the port town of Kesennuma, which lost more than 1,400 people in the disaster.

"Speed," he says, is the thing most needed to get the region back on its feet.

Google Inc (GOOG) Faces New Competitor as Publishers Join ...

Google Inc. (GOOG)Pearson Plc (NYSE:PSO) and Bertelsmann A.G. agreed today that the two would combine their book-publshing operations, Random House and Penguin respectively, in a joint venture, to be called Penguin Random House.

"The combination of Penguin and Random House would create a book-publishing powerhouse responsible for roughly a quarter of global English-language consumer book sales,"?writes the Wall Street Journal. "The joint venture... will create a publishing giant that will have more heft at a time when the book business is being rocked by the rise of online retailers and e-books," like Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), Apple, and Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG).

"Together, the two publishers will be able to share a large part of their costs, to invest more for their author and reader constituencies and to be more adventurous in trying new models in this exciting, fast-moving world of digital books and digital readers," said Marjorie Scardino, Pearson's chief executive.?In other words, the cost-savings will enable the publishers to compete more effectively, but there is more to it than that.

Earlier this month, Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) reached a settlement with several book publishers, Pearson included, "allow publishers to choose whether Google digitizes their books and journals," writes the New York Times. "The deal allows publishers to choose whether to allow Google to digitize their out-of-print books that are still under copyright protection. If Google does so, it will also provide them with a digital copy for their own use, perhaps to sell on their Web sites."

The litigation began several years ago when e-books were still in their infancy, and long before Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN)?Kindles and Apple iPads, and it doesn't solve some of the issues Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) has faced with authors. But, as explained by the New York Times, "under the settlement, publishers get the benefit of Google digitizing out-of-print books that they might not otherwise have turned into e-books. Meanwhile, Google can expand the library of e-books it sells to consumers."

?What?s really exciting about today?s settlement is the fact that Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) will be getting access to books that have long been out of print, that are in copyright,? said Tom Turvey, director of strategic partnerships at?Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG). ?It?s good for users who weren?t able to buy them before, and for publishers.?

The entrepreneur as prospector

Entrepreneurs have one fundamental goal ? to find an unmet need in the market, Dr. Cornwall writes.

PFT: Giants, Patriots outrace Hurricane Sandy

Mid Atlantic Coast Prepares For Hurricane SandyGetty Images

As Hurricane Sandy bears down on the East Coast, no one is immune from its impact, and it?s making for nervous times for those in the NFL.

The league office in New York is already closed for the day, ?but many are working their way around the storm.

The Giants were able to get out of Dallas just in time, landing back in New Jersey just after 1 a.m. according to Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Ledger, leading defensive end Justin Tuck to tweet ?Just landed. Thank you God.?

The Patriots appear to have gotten out of London this morning, but may not be able to get directly back to Boston, according to Albert Breer of the NFL Network.

It?s not just teams that are struggling to get home.

Florio plowed through the night to get back from New York, just in time for a West Virginia blizzard.

Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe?and some other New England scribes are?stuck in London until Wednesday, which is good for their Marriott points but bad for their families.

Others who were covering games on this continent are having their own version of Cannonball Run today, driving back home since flights were unavailable.

Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel has his team of Dolphins writers at a Waffle House ?in Savannah, Ga., en route back from New Jersey.

Somebody should check in with Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News, who was driving back from Dallas, and hasn?t checked in since blowing through Memphis, after being trailed by a suspicious red pickup all the way through Arkansas.

These are, of course, minor inconveniences considering all those who have already suffered and will continue to over the next few days. Our hope is that everyone arrives at their destination safely, and stays safe as the storm comes ashore.

Iowa Newspaper Backs Mitt Romney

intro: Iowa's largest newspaper has endorsed Mitt Romney, delivering a blow to President Barack Obama, who it endorsed in 2008.

The Des Moines Register's editorial board wrote that Obama's "best efforts to resuscitate the stumbling economy have fallen short. Nothing indicates it would change with a second term in the White House."

Romney becomes the first Republican the paper has endorsed since 1972.

And the Miami Herald renewed its endorsement of Obama on Oct. 28, citing his actions to bailout the auto industry and end the Iraq war. The paper endorsed Obama in 2008.

As the president and Romney crisscross the country in the closing week of the campaign, they're hoping to pick up endorsements from influential newspapers that could help boost their fortunes in key swing states.

In 2008, more than 400 newspapers endorsed a presidential candidate, according to Editor & Publisher magazine, which tracked the endorsements.

Here is a guide to the swing state paper editorial boards picks for the presidency:

quicklist: 1 title: Iowa category: text: The visit Romney made to the Des Moines Register editorial board revealed how seriously his campaign takes its endorsement.

After backing McCain and Hillary Clinton in the 2008 primaries, the Register endorsed Obama in that general election. Obama won the state by a wide margin.

Perhaps foreshadowing its 2012 endorsement of Romney, the paper tangled with the Obama campaign last week when the campaign initially refused to allow the editorial board's interview with Obama to be on the record. The campaign eventually relented and released a transcript of the comments.

In the end, the Register endorsed Romney, the first time it endorsed a Republican since 1972.

quicklist: 2 title: Florida category: text: In Florida, whose 29 electoral votes may be among the crown jewels of presidential politics, the state's two largest newspapers have split their endorsements.

The Tampa Bay Times, once again, opted for Obama Friday saying that "now is not the time to reverse course.

"The recovery has proven more difficult than anyone imagined," the editorial board said. "But conditions would be far worse without the president's steady leadership."

Romney secured a big vote of confidence from the Orlando Sentinel, the largest newspaper in central Florida, which endorsed Obama in 2008.

"We have little confidence that Obama would be more successful managing the economy and the budget in the next four years," the paper's editorial board wrote. "For that reason, though we endorsed him in 2008, we are recommending Romney in this race."

Obama won Florida by 2.8 percent in 2008.

In the fierce battle for Florida's 29 Electoral College votes, the endorsements of Obama and Romney by the Tampa Bay Times and the Orlando Sentinel, respectively, are major boosts.

The Tampa Tribune also backed Romney in an editorial, hoping to boost his fortunes in the state. The paper endorsed McCain in 2008.

quicklist: 3 title: Wisconsin category: text: Mitt Romney's selection of Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as his running mate put the normally blue state into play in November. The state's dramatic political shift in the 2010 election toward the Republican Party has added to its swing state status. Its largest paper, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, endorsed Obama in 2008 and Sen. John Kerry in 2004 but has declined to endorse any candidate for president in 2012.

quicklist: 4 title: Ohio category: text: After meeting with Mitt Romney earlier this month, the Columbus Dispatch editorial board endorsed the former Massachusetts governor over President Obama.

"After nearly four years of economic stagnation, massive unemployment, record-setting debt and government intrusions into the economy that have paralyzed the private sector, the United States needs a new direction," the paper said in its endorsement.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer, which endorsed Obama in 2008, renewed its backing over the weekend. The paper credited Obama with leading the nation back "from the brink of depression" but conceded that this year's endorsement comes "with less enthusiasm or optimism" than its first.

Ohio's Akron Beacon Journal aksi endorsed Obama, saying that "what matters are his real accomplishments and the direction he proposes for the years ahead."

quicklist: 5 title: Virginia category: text: Perhaps it's a sign of the times. Two of Virginia's newspapers, the Virginian-Pilot and the Roanoke Times, said in 2008 they would no longer endorse candidates for president, leaving the Richmond Times-Dispatch as the state's only remaining major endorser, even as Virginia's status as a critical swing state has risen in national politics. The Times-Dispatch endorsed McCain in 2008 and Bush in 2004 but has not yet revealed its 2012 pick.

Notably, several other Washington, D.C.-area newspapers, including the Washington Post and the Washington Times, circulate their papers in Virginia's northern suburbs.

quicklist: 6 title: New Hampshire category: text: New Hampshire is a tiny state with a potentially big electoral impact. Similarly, the New Hampshire Union-Leader has typically played an outsize role in electoral politics. After it twice passed up the chance to endorse Romney, who was governor of next door neighbor Massachusetts, in 2008 and in 2012, the paper endorsed him in the 2012 election.

"What Obama offers America is a fantasy," the paper wrote. "Sputtering economies are not sparked back to life by government-directed spending on industries hand-chosen by politicians. They are revived by unleashing the energy and creativity of the American people."

quicklist: 7 title: Colorado category: text: Colorado may be one of the purplest states in this year's election, and the endorsements reflect the state's fluid political identity. Obama snagged the biggest prize with the Denver Post's endorsement. The paper notably endorsed George Bush in 2004.

Two other smaller papers, the Colorado Pueblo Chieftain and the Colorado Longmont Times-Call, have endorsed Romney.

quicklist: 8 title: North Carolina category: text: Normally, a state squarely in the Republican column, North Carolina shifted to Obama in 2008, giving him a razor thin .3 percentage point win. It's up for grabs again in 2012, with 15 electoral votes at stake.

Last week, one of the state's smaller papers, the Winston-Salem Journal, flipped from its position in 2008 to endorse Obama. But two other of the states larger papers have yet to endorse, including the Raleigh News & Observer, which went with Obama in 2008, and the state's largest paper, the Charlotte Observer, which also endorsed Obama four years ago.

The smaller Ashville Citizen-Times backed Obama in an op-ed, saying that "with Obama, we know what we are getting."

quicklist: 9 title: Nevada category: text: Nevada cast its lot with Obama in 2008, but with the housing crash hitting the state's economy hard, it is solidly in the undecided column for 2012. The state's largest newspaper, the Las Vegas Review-Journal, endorsed Romney this month. The editorial board endorsed McCain in 2008.

And the Las Vegas Sun, which endorsed Obama in 2008, renewed its support in 2012.

Yellow Light of Death Fix: Ready Anytime, Anywhere

Hardcore gamers know how devastating it feels to encounter hardware problems with their PS3. It is like having your favorite pet die, knowing it will never come back. It is like losing an important document like your passport or a birth certificate. But good thing about PS3 equipment is that Yellow Light of Death problems can easily be addressed. Yellow light of Death fix can be obtained easily if you come to the right place and if you know the right person. To maximize the gaming experience with your PS3, problems on Yellow Light of Death should be solved with the help of a skilled repairman. A Playstation console is considered intricate equipment that contains great many parts which the untrained eye may not be able to handle effectively.

Yellow Light of Death may cause devastating problems for gamers, and most of the time console owners cannot help but feel helpless when struck with this problem. Out of desperation, some just junk out their malfunctioning console and just opt to buy a new one in order to get back to the game, but this is of course seriously impractical. A yellow light of death fix need not be expensive or costly. First, kindly check if the cords are placed in their sockets. If it is, check the power supply. Another thing is to check if the console is still covered by the company?s warranty. Look online for the nearest service center that caters to the equipment?s need. Compare also the service rates and decide which center you wish to entrust your console to. Find a reasonable rate and remember to keep it professional.

If you are not sure what caused the Yellow Light of Death to light up, do not panic. More importantly, do not undertake the task of performing a repair without proper and professional knowledge of the equipment. This may void the warranty (if it is still in effect) and may endanger you, should the equipment cause shock due to faulty electrical problems. Know first the company?s profile and check with the people you know about the quality of service that they provided. Once you have settled on where you wish to have your console repaired, meet the technician and talk to him about what happened before the Yellow Light of Death lit up. A yellow light of death fix cannot be made if the technician does not have a background on the console?s history. Remember to be honest as this will hasten up the process of a yellow light of death fix. If the technician knows what he is looking for, he can fix it faster. Agree on a reasonable service fee and do not be shy to ask for a discount; just remember to be gracious when he has done his job well too.

After having the PS3 yellow light of death fixed, remember to take care of the equipment. Check for overheating and make sure that adequate power supply reaches the console. Do not allow dust to build up on the console as this may affect the Blu Ray drive?s ability to playback the disc. Place the console in a secure, well ventilated area. If possible, place a cooling fan near the console to prevent overheating. This will prevent the thermal paste to heat up to much and thereby cause the dreaded Yellow Light of Death. In the meantime, enjoy the endless possibilities with your PS3. You can challenge your friend on the latest first person shooting or your brother to a racing match. Whatever game you may choose, remember that Yellow Light of Death does not spell an end to your PS3 experience, if you know where to go and what to look for.

Yellow Light of Death Fix
It is always a better option to get your PS3 repaired quickly and as soon as it gets faulty so that you do not risk it further getting any problems. A PS3 console is very precious for many people and hence it should be taken care of.
